Mug N Bun

Time travel is easy;just head west on 10th street towards Speedway. There you’ll find a piece of true Americana;a sight sure to make anyone grin;even the most jaded of old farts. An American Drive In.And the Mug N Bun is;in our humble opinion the best. You can pull up to the “main building” ( where all the cooking is done ) sit in your car and have the “car hop” come to you. After you order, your server brings it to you and you eat in your car;that’s as American as complaining about taxes.Just to the east is the Dine In building;that’s where you go for a more conventional dining experience. The decor is pretty much Hoosier chic;metal signs on the walls, some old, some not so old.Our server told me that all the signs used to be hanging in the owner’s house.I bet the owner’s better half was just as happy to see this addition as he was.As for the server she was probably the most gracious server I have ever encountered. She was attentive but not butt kissy;eager to explain the menu, and genuinely happy to wait on us.Now for the food. The breaded tenderloin was very good,it’s not hand breaded by any means;it’s ready-made and flash frozen;but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it was tasty and filling, and less than 4 bucks.Their BBQ isn’t dry rubbed and smoked it’s simmered on the top of the stove, pulled ,then heavily sauced with a good no name sauce. The sandwiches they serve are plump and juicy, reminiscent of the glory days of drive in food. But the biggest reason to go to a drive in is the Root Beer.Any drive in, worth its name has to have a killer home-made Root Beer. And right now Mug N Bun is king. The Beer they serve is hand’s down the finest I believe I have ever had.It has no caffeine, lots of real sugar and a delicate ginger finish that seems to go on forever. They also have malts;malts that are at least as good as Rock-Colas Cafe.So if you’re old and want some nostalgia;or young and curious,go west I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.Mug-n-Bun Drive-in on Urbanspoon
