This is the half order of biscuits and gravy that we split as an appetizer. The gravy was better than most but not as good as Ollie’s. The biscuit was very nice indeed, and it only cost $3.60.
For my meal I could not resist their Beef Manhattan. For all you non Midwestern folks that is a roast beef sandwich cut on a bias with a pile of mashed potatoes in between the 2 halves. Then the entire thing is covered in brown gravy. There version was $ 6.60.
The taters were Potato Pearls and the gravy was probably from a mix but the beef was real and the portion was generous and it was hot. I thought it was delicious. It reminded me of my first Manhattan as a kid at the old Troy Restaurant in Downtown Indy. It is hard to resist hot beef and gravy. Of course had I been more observant I would have noticed that there special was meat loaf and I have a “thing” for meatloaf.
As big a lunch as it was I decided I had some room left for pie. In this case it was Banana Dream. A real pie crust filled with banana pudding and topped with whipped cream. It was pretty good. I probably could have eaten a whole pie.
This diner doesn’t have much of an electronic presence so I scanned their menu but only the lunch part turned out.
When Pat called Wednesday he told me he had a taste for beef; pot roast, cow. After little research I thought Big Daddy’s fit the criteria. We have been here some time ago in the pre blog days. They have an extensive menu offering pot roast nachos, a pot roast sandwich and even a pot roast quesadilla as well as the usual bar fare.
I was tempted with their pot roast Manhattan special for $8.95. For you non Hoosiers a Manhattan is an open-faced sandwich served with mashed potatoes and smothered in gravy. Very tasty but too much food for me in the Summer.At least for lunch. I followed Pat’s lead and ordered a burger. A plain burger for $7.99. I added cheddar for $.79 and bacon for $.99
I had the same problem as Pat with my burger. It was a bit overcooked as well. However that wasn’t as big a deal as was the blandness of the meat. I think they may want to add a house seasoning to their list of kitchen essentials. On the plus side was the house chips. Pat declined his because of the carbs which just forced him to eat mine. Here they get the potatoes waffle cut from a local vendor and fry them in-house. They were great. The best chip I have had. Hands down.
As I commented in the beginning they have an extensive menu so a bland burger won’t keep me away. As for pricing Pat’s burger was about 12 bucks and mine was less than $10. That may seem high for the South side but as Pat noted their closest competitors are no more. That may have been an incentive to goose the prices a bit. I don’t know. Another way to look at it is that you may get Downtown pricing but you also get free parking. As for the service it was stellar. They were having a busy service yet our service took it in stride and kept everything flowing nicely. Another plus are the beer specials. Wednesday they had 24 ounce draft light beers for $3.75. Now that is not at all Downtown pricing. So I can see my self back again. I just won’t order a burger.
Well another new joint opened up Downtown. The spot the owners picked has been a problematic one for previous tenants as it has seen 4 different restaurants open and close in the last 6 years. That is a high number even in the high mortality world of food and beverage. The space is very narrow, and the kitchen is downstairs, which can lead to some interesting situations.
They don’t offer draft beer; which is odd for this area; and their selections are not very spectacular. They had 3 different cocktail specials and for a food special they offered a club sandwich for $6 discounted from $7.50. I don’t usually eat clubs because they can be difficult to fit into your mouth. Unless you dis-assemble them,which can be fun.
There wasn’t anything exceptional about the sandwich. It was well-built and included both ham and turkey with the bacon. Some places like to omit the turkey and add a slice of American cheese,which I don’t particularly like. The fries were exceptional tasty. They were your standard Sysco straight cut fries but they were fried and seasoned well.
On Mondays they discount their menu to 5 bucks. Everything but steaks and an appetizer combo. Also on Tuesday they feature 25 cent tacos. A true taco Tuesday. The place is solid. No flash, no bang, no hook. In the long run that shouldn’t bother them. It is a tough gig and I wish them nothing but the best.
I have wanted to try this joint for a while. I am not sure why we waited so long? Maybe we needed to wait for a Dark and Stormy Halloween afternoon. You know; to balance out the hip granola vibe of The Ripple.
The place is in an old house; so it’s not too big. The menu is interesting and it has been on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. And that appearance has yet to go to its head. Unlike some joints in Indy.
As you can see on the menu it offers quite a bit of Vegan Fare. That is why Pat tried their breakfast service. He and Fran went here when their two vegan daughters were in town. Their pricing can be a trifle high on some items. That may be why he was a wee bit snarky at first. It was his turn to buy. Although he did suggest the spot. Ahem.
These must be the Three Sisters. The name sake of the Cafe.
Our service was a little perfunctory. Everyone was pleasant but our server just seem rather new to the work.
As for the food; I thought my sandwich was outstanding. It was slow cooked Fresh Ham with braised Kale and pepper jack cheese. In other words slow roasted pig and Country Greens. Everything worked so well together. The more you ate the more you enjoyed it. Well you can keep your Manhattans; be they beef or turkey. When the snow stars flying give me one of these. Every time.
Now every great sandwich deserves a great side. And here that would be calico potatoes. A combo of grated sweet and yellow potatoes. A huge portion fried perfectly, toasted handsomely and tasting wonderfully.
