This place opened in October and is in a Moose Lodge. That is why the banner has to pass as the facade. I found out about it by searching the internet for any new joints in the Irvington area. I don’t consider this as part of Irvington but obviously Google does. The reason I even mention this is that if you want to find new places to eat sometimes you have to search them out. This little grill definitely makes the search worthwhile.
As you know the purpose of this blog is to cheer lead for the independent restaurant. This restaurant is owned and operated by Gina and her husband and it is housed in a Moose Lodge. Now what is more Mom and Pop than that.
Their menu is pretty standard with the exception of one rather creative side dish.
They offer a bit of home cooking, which I like , so I had a tough time deciding what to eat. I opted for a Pollock sandwich. Beer battered white fish seemed like a good idea for a cold December day. Also I spent an extra buck fifty for their creative side dish. Fried onion pearls.
Honestly I was a bit nonplussed when I saw two pieces on a round bun. I had expected one piece on a long roll. My confusion was unwarranted. It was a solid 6 ounces of fish and it was very nicely done. The produce was fresh and overall it was a very good sandwich and those crazy onion pearls were excellent. Very clever idea.
I intend on coming back at least to try cake or cobbler. That is the cool thing about independent joints The menus may be nearly identical but the execution can be very different. Example: Onion Rings. The Mug in Irvington and Greenfield puts mustard in their batter for the rings. Not a fan. Gina’s makes their’s Flamin’ Hot. Have to try those.
One more observation. They have a huge smoker out back that could hold a bunch of pig. Now that is one more thing to get excited about. BBQ. Even without a smoker though this is a joint worth looking into.
This is their sign facing 116th Street. I don’t even know if there is a functioning door on the front. The parking is on the side. Where there is definitely a door.
This is a relief beside the door off the parking lot. It is sculpted from clay and embedded in the brick exterior wall. Worth the trip just to check it out.
As we often do we started with an order of mushrooms for $7.99.
They give you a bunch. A basket full of hot and crunchy ‘shrums. We consider them as good as that served at the Checkered Flag. Which says a bit.
I was torn between the brisket and a bison burger. The thought of a bloody hunk of meat won me over and I settled on the bison, mid-rare. As you can see it was a large patty; nearly an inch thick and it was cooked perfectly. Sometimes some joints won’t cook ground meat anything less than 160 degrees; which is a bit more than medium. This was as I wanted it. They use a Brioche bun comes from S. Rosen’s from Chicago. It was wonderful. A shiny soft top and a tender and sweet interior. It was a perfect foil to a mid-rare burger. For sides they give a choice of several different options. Except fries. Fries are a 99 cent up charge. I got the potato salad. It is a brand I am familiar with and like. It was a grand lunch for $10.99/ Pat’s fish was $9.99. pricing you would expect for Fishers.
This is another member of the R. Lux family of restaurants. We have been to everyone; except for the Meridian. Maybe we’ll do that for the Holidays. The place is very comfortable and the service is as good as the food. Our server/ bar tender, Brenda did a Masterful job. She also makes a wonderful Margarita; which they had on special today for 4 bucks. So I think this joint is worth the trip. Even all the way to 116th Street.
Well like I said last week we went back to the public house for eats. We were not at all disappointed.We started off with a lamb chop appetizer. They brought out four delightful little chops nestled on a mound of delicious Asian inspired slaw. The slaw was quite good, nicely cut and tossed in a delicious slightly sweet vinegar dressing. They also served a nice sweet chili dipping sauce. But for us it wasn’t necessary. The chops were so moist and tender they nearly jumped off the bone into your mouth. But the dipping sauce didn’t go to waste, just think of it as a sweet chili shooter.
For our main course Patrick got their four cheese pizza, smoked Gouda being the selling point. I was torn between the brisket sandwich and the bison. I decided I had to try the bison, not because I haven’t had bison before but because they said it was dredged in Porter beer. And that made me curious.Even though I was pretty sure the Porter wouldn’t impart a whole bunch of flavor I had to try it, because bison is what Americans should eat. That was a slogan for a bison burger vendor some years back. Pat loved the pizza; thin crust, just the right amount of sauce and plenty of cheese. That is his kind of pie. My bison was a great sandwich. I neglected to ask the server for mid-rare so it came to me more medium. But it was still moist and delicious. The selection of accompaniments helped make it great. Fresh tomato and lettuce, smoky bacon,white cheese and a touch of Dijon mustard all on toasted dark rye bread. That is the thing about sandwiches quality ingredients and proper combinations makes the difference good and great.For all of their sandwiches you get a choice of side. And the list is pretty extensive. I chose oven fried fingerling potatoes.They were on par with the rest of the food. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside; the way I personally like them. So all in all I think this joint is a keeper. You get far North food for less than downtown prices. If you ask me that is something to think about.
As you probably noticed something is odd about our food pictures. For the appetizer picture we took it prior to digging in. The two others we forgot until we were about halfway through. We will try to do better next time.
