This place opened about 2 or 3 years ago in the heart of Old Greenwood. It is housed in a 100-year-old building and is decorated more or less as an homage to the 70’s and 80’s. The table tops are all decoupaged with cut outs from that era. I think they are pretty cool but the shellac used to cover and protect the artwork can be a bit tacky to the touch. Unfortunately that can lead some folks to mistakenly think the table tops are dirty. Unfortunate.
The big hits on the menu are their burgers and their dogs. The burgers are hand formed half pounders and the dogs are 4 oz. The hook is the clever and creative toppings for them.
They have a lunch menu which features a select number of their sandwiches at a reduced price. All of their items come with fries. Pat and I are both trying to watch are carbs, so I was surprised when he ordered a plain Jane dog as an app.
I did get a bite ( a one inch piece) and it was very nice. It had little rips in it as though it had experience great heat. Maybe dropped in a deep fryer and then put on a grill? I don’t know but I think it would have been killer with some relish and mustard.
I ordered off the regular menu. A PB&J Burger for $9.99. Sound interesting? It is a burger smeared with peanut butter topped with bacon, pepperjack cheese and jalapeno. jalapeno is the J in the name. Then the thing is drizzled with maple syrup. Crazy.
It is a big burger and I had to cut it in half to eat it. First thing they cooked it mid rare for me; which is a big plus. Secondly the burger is really good meat. Finally all the odd toppings made sense. The peanut butter melted onto the burger bringing a degree of fat to the lean meat. The chiles and cheese brought some heat and the bacon brought a nice smoky crunch. The syrup just brought a sweetness that your taste buds never expected but appreciated.
One last thing. The french fries. I really liked them. They were nice and crisp on the outside yet a little mushy on the inside. As for the seasoning I found it to be a rather sublime accent to the potato. Most house seasonings are too spicy or too salty. This was like Goldilocks. Just right.
Note that this is a Craft Tap House, as opposed to a Craft Brew House. They sell the Craft beer they don’t brew it. And according to the signage they offer 40 different brews. That is the current “thing” with taverns. Hell Yard House and Hop Cat each have over 100 on tap. It can make a fellow dizzy. I have no idea how long this place has been open I found it on the inter net searching for joints on the far south side. They have a slick web site,but they don’t print any prices,which vexes me. I can guess what they charge based on other places of that type,but I prefer knowing.
The majority of their sandwiches are on the complex side. They add a bunch of stuff to them to create the perception of an added value. In some cases that is the case. In others it isn’t.
Take the sandwich I order for example,the Stout Pork Belly BLT.

It sounds swell doesn’t it. It convinced me to shell out 12 bucks for it. The reality is the bacon was too crisp. All of the fatty juiciness was removed. so instead of a crunch to your mouth it was a crack. And their marmalade was way over the top. Too much sweet to go with not enough salty.
The bread was pretty good though it had a nice garlic taste;but that could have been from the butter. For the sandwiches you have a choice of sea salt fries, house made Parmesan chips or a “side kick” salad. Per my servers suggestion I opted for the chips. Why O Why do places insist on making potato chips? These were reasonably well made but seasoning was non-existent. Parmesan is not a seasoning. So these were pretty bland. Also quantity doesn’t over come mediocre. Will I go back? Possibly if I am in the area. They do have a pork burger on the menu. Of course it isn’t just a plain ol’ burger

It could be a flop, but there is only one way to find out.
This is the oldest craft brewery in the state,opening in 1990. It was modeled after an English Pub. It is a series of several connected rooms,wood-paneled and rather dark. Just the right atmosphere for sipping ESB and single malts,not so much for picture-taking.
Pat and I have both been here before. I just never felt compelled to write about it because;frankly I thought the joint was a bit boring. Not bad just not too interesting. Well they have changed their menu and have added a couple of new and exciting brews so I thought today would be a good day to review the Papa of Hoosier brewing. They have always had a good selection of vegetarian dishes and with the new menu they offer even more. The also added a cheese curd appetizer for $8.75.
These were just plain good. A nice size with just the slightest outside crunch to offset the mozzarella cheesiness inside. I think these are possibly the best in town.
Pat ordered a Pub BLT for $7.95. You could get it with Applewood smoked bacon or veggie coconut “bacon”. For 2 bucks you can add Braunschweiger as well.
I was intrigued by the Thai spiced Pork sandwich,for $10.
Marinated in our ESB and slow braised with cumin, Chinese Five Spice and fresh ginger, flat grilled on toasted baguette with shredded carrots, spicy cucumbers, fresh cilantro and mayo. 10.00
Sound really great doesn’t? Unfortunately it reads better than it eats. The bread was hard,the meat was dry and offered little flavor. If they were trying to offer a version of a Bahn mi I can think of a few ways they could have pulled it off better. I also decided on a side of onion rings which were okay. Thin slices of onion simply coated and fried. Nice but nothing to shout about.
The beers were great. The stars of the line were two cask ales. A red and an ESB. Both were very drinkable. Pat tried a mix of the two. Pretty tasty. If you are a beer drinking vegetarian this may be the place for you. They have a nice new menu on their website so one bad sandwich won’t deter me from going back.
This is both a cafe ,in that you are served your food and a cafeteria ,in that you order your food at a cashier and then take your seat. Are you with me? It is located in the Indiana State Museum which is right on the canal so you can’t get much better scenery in the summer.

When you enter you find the cashier stand with menus posted. This is where you order,pay and receive a numbered plastic placard, like an old-time Sizzlers.
You walk through the cooking area to get your drinks,or frozen yogurt from their soft serve machine. Or for some impulse buy.
Once you pay and get your beverage you can sit inside or out on a wide veranda overlooking the canal.
In the bottom picture you can see the skyline of the IUPUI campus in the background. Now really isn’t this a great place to eat?
Now for the food. They had a pepperoni flat bread special for $7.99. Evidently it fulfilled Pats dream.
Pat suggested this place because his wife; Fran, who works at the university went there and recommended it. She also mentioned that she had a fried green tomato BLT. Well I did not see that when I checked out the menu on their website this morning but I sure saw it on the menu board. I really like fried green tomatoes, and I really,really like BLT sandwiches. So the combo of the two was a no-brainer. They use Smoking Goose bacon so it was mandatory for me for lunch. They put theirs on a whole grain toast with both green leaf and iceberg lettuce and a nice slathering of mayo. Normally I can take or leave mayo,but with both fried green tomato or BLT sammiches you need the mayo. Of course as a kid we used Miracle Whip( salad dressing). It was cheaper. But as I entered my teens I acquired a taste for mayo.
Now this was a great sandwich. Crunch from the bacon and the lettuce. Tart and tangy tomatoes with a nice creaminess from a healthy dose of mayo. $9.99 with sweet potato chips.
So. Yes I liked this sandwich. Was it unique and original. No,but how many sandwiches are? I think this is a great place to catch lunch, and check out the State Museum. Plus you get to look over the canal. Now that is a bonus,if for no other reason than the chance for people watching.
There’s a new café in town,Thyme to Eat it’s located at the corner of S. Meridian St. and Hanna Avenue.the building used to house a dark bar in its previous life,now it’s a bright and airy café with light green interior and a pastel painted brick exterior. It might be a little on the girlie side but men are allowed and you don’t have to take off your shoes to enter.But trappings aside, it’s a serious eatery.
It’s “main bag” is to offer healthier options for lunch,and breakfast.their produce is organic and their bacon is uncured.That means you get all the yummy smokiness of pork belly with out all the residual effects of those pesky nitrites and nitrates.That’s what caught Pat’s eye;their uncured BLT;with avocado.They offer different side options;among them Sweet Potato chips;that I believe they make themselves.Since my culinary roots are from the southwest Pat suggested I get the Southwest Chicken salad.So I suggested he get a side of Sweet Tater chips;but Patrick being deaf as a post couldn’t hear so he opted for a side of sliced tomatoes.Yep,sliced tomatoes with a bacon,lettuce,and TOMATO sandwich;but I digress.The sandwich itself looked great,leaf lettuce,Roma tomatoes and a generous portion of both bacon and avocado.More importantly Pat really enjoyed it.
Before I talk about my salad. I have to say I am very finicky about salads, that’s why I don’t eat them out too often. For most places their salad mix consists of Romain, iceberg lettuce, chopped too big or too small and mixed with red cabbage and carrots for color. Now, you can do that yourself or buy it already done in Cryovac bags.There is another option called spring mix; which is an assortment of various salad greens; none of which are romaine or iceberg. That’s my favorite, and it is also what Thyme to Eat Cafe uses.One last thing about restaurant salads, especially the large “dinner” salads. Since most customers nearly always request dressing on the side that is what most establishments do. However, I believe a large salad should be tossed with the dressing be it vinaigrette or creamy. And this is what this place does. It says we have a specific salad with a specific set of ingredients and a specific dressing; so trust us. We did put some thought into this, so don’t get the dressing on the side.
Now that I’ve got that off my chest on to the review of the Southwest chicken salad. As I mentioned, it was spring mix tossed with a tasty creamy avocado dressing. Mixed in was an assortment of corn,black beans, avocado chunks,sweet and roasted peppers and Monterey jack cheese. Sitting on top was some of the tastiest chicken breast I have had out in quite some time. It appeared to be cooked on a flat griddle, just a little brown on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. It was a top-notch salad.Since Pat and I only go to these restaurants once, and since I live on the north side and no longer drive; the odds of me revisiting, as much as I would like to, are remote. However I did e-mail my sister-in-law who lives in that neck of the woods about this place. Maybe she’ll invite me to go there with her. In which case she could pick me up at the nearest bus stop, which I’m told is about a mile away. But to all you folks who live on the south side you really should try this place. A good independent eatery is as rare and priceless as an honest politician.
