This post does not have anything to do with eating;directly. It’s about my favorite blog that I follow. I Don’t Get It;by Kerby. It’s about things that make no sense. So she has plenty of material to work with. It is written by a young lady from Texas. Having spent some time in Texas I have good feelings towards Texans. I don’t wish to generalize,but in general the Texicans I dealt with were stand up folks that could definite weave a good yarn. Kerby definitely fits that description. She tells a mean story and she leaves no doubt on what she means.
One of her recent posts was about Roquefort cheese. Specifically Roquefort dressing and how old coots preferred it over all other dressings. Being a semi old coot who loves all bleu cheese;especially Roquefort I added my 2 cents. She responded by asking what it was that I liked so much about Roquefort. And you know… I really could not fully describe the flavor of bleu cheese. I did say that I thought that Roquefort cheese taste more “bleu” than the rest. But what the hell is that supposed to mean. Pat and I normally plan our excursions well in advance. This time our decision to go to Irvington was totally spontaneous. The reason I’m putting this in is we have a friend,Jim, who lives in Irvington and works out of his home. Whenever we have lunch in that vicinity we call him and he joins us, This time, since this decision was spur of the moment and I didn’t have my phone with me, and since Pat didn’t have his number-we could not call. So now on to the food.
They have a trendy chic menu of sandwiches,salads and home-made soups. Featuring ham, turkey, different cheeses and sprouts. They also have roast beef which I avoided, thinking it was pre- sliced deli meat. I found out later it might be roasted in-house. Now that is a cow of a different color. Their SOD was creamy chicken and mushroom. We each had a cup and it was wonderful. Thick with chicken and mushrooms in a delicious real heavy cream sauce. The best I have had in quite a while.
Pat had a combo with the aforementioned soup and half a grilled cheese. The sandwich was pretty standard. Thick toast, cheese and tomato. Pretty basic. I on the other hand ordered the most pedestrian sandwich on the menu; a sloppy Joe. What can I say, I’m a Hoosier. I can’t pass up sloppy Joe or meat loaf. The sandwich was good, but it is what it is. Ground beef browned up with peppers and onions with a sweet tomato sauce. You see a sloppy Joe sandwich is like beer. They are all good;just some are better than others.
They don’t serve chips with their sandwiches they serve something they call veggie straws. These are square little tubes in pale green,light red and beige. They don’t have a distinctive flavor. My guess is they are an extruded potato product with vegetable color. Whatever they are they are different and definitely cute. Make paste of cheese or a compound butter and you could make a funky edible log cabin. Oh,one more thing they offer pastries and locally made chocolates. They have a display case up front. I not sure why I didn’t take any pictures. At least of the chocolates. They are turtles and hearts approximately 1-1/2 – 2 inches in diameter. They are made off premise and brought in and painted. That’s right painted in pastel colors. They look like little enameled jewels. Next time I go I am both taking pictures and biting the heads off a few turtles.
What a big name for a rather small place. Pat and I have been meaning to try this place for a while, don’t know why we haven’t until now. They have a pretty good format. They offer a wide variety of deli and sub sandwiches; grilled or cold. Pair that up with house made soups and chili and a plethora of different salads you have a joint with lunch written all over it. If you take that marriage and add a case displaying the most decadent looking cakes and pastries this side of Bavaria you have a brand. They even have a merchandise freezer offering a selection of their products you can take home. Well now that my cheer leader routine is over let’s talk about their food.
They have a category called grilled sandwiches that are all $9.40 and come with choice of soup,salad,chili or mac & cheese. I got a Havarti Delight. Havarti cheese,avocado,sprouts and tomato on wheat bread. It was a nicely prepared and tasty sandwich. Creamy cheese, double buttery from the avocado and the buttered toast with just the right touch of acidity from the ‘mater. Had I to do it over again I would have added bacon. Bacon is always a nice addition. I did have a bowl of chili. I had to have some meat or else my stomach would have thought I was angry with it. The chili was pretty good better than most; not as good as some. Pat had his usual default lunch; grilled cheese. It had an interesting choice of cheeses. Provolone,jack and Colby on what appeared to be sourdough bread. It was satisfactory. However Pat got a little miffed when he learned ,after the fact, he should have been offered bread choice and an option to add 2 veggies from a list of 4 . I guess he should have read the menu board. He opted for salad with oil and vinegar. Has the manufacture of oil and vinegar cruets been suspended? Once again the oil and vinegar was served in portion cups. OK end of rant. After lunch Pat had a chocolate glazed donut. I had a bite and it was really good. Trouble is it cost $1.67. As Patrick so sagely pointed out it was no better than Longs and for that price he could have gotten 3 donuts. I think you better leave your sweet tooth at home when you stop here for lunch.
Another new joint has opened in Fountain Square;Pure Food Eatery and in this case Pure means simple.It is a lovely little place,not too artsy fartsy or too urban tavern chic;just nice.The menu is Panini Press centered.Sandwiches and wraps in simple and tasty combos.Not a single french fry or chicken wing to be found;no fryers anywhere.They did fall into the aioli trap however.That is where you flavor mayo call it (fill in the blank)mayo and “jazz”up your menu.A good emulsion sauce has its place but sometimes people stick it in the most unlikely places;like grilled cheese.Since I am still dentally challenged that is what I ordered.Actually a half sandwich and a cup of soup.All their Panini are available as 1/2 or whole.The wholes are reasonably priced,in the $7-$8 range;the 1/2’s are not as reasonable;at $6.The 3 cheese Panini was pretty good.A curious combo of Havarti,Swiss and Provolone cheeses with the obligatory slice of tomato.Their addition of Pesto mayo;although not traditional,did bring a nice additional taste to the mild cheeses;also a touch of unctiousness to the toasted sour dough bread.Patrick decided on a BLT.Nothing out of the ordinary except for the avocado spread;which Pat turned down;due to onion content.We both enjoyed our sandwiches;and more than enjoyed the SOD;Chicken and Rice. A delicious home-made stock loaded with fresh Tarragon.The stock alone was worth the 90 cent up-charge,the diced chicken and rice was a bonus.In addition to sour dough they also offer wheat and rye bread,which would go well with some of their other filling options.
The biggest deal of the day was the Thursday beer special.New Belgiums for $2.50.I discovered Shift by New Belgium.They call it a Lager but it has a definite Ale quality.Delicious;and a bargain at $2.50 for a 16 oz can.The thing about good beer is you get nutrition and you can consume regardless of the condition of your teeth.
I know;I know the Tin Roof is a corporate joint but I had to conduct some business at the City County building and when I finished I needed sustenance quickly.And since it took such a long time for it to open I was flat-out curious.So I called Patrick and told him to meet me there.It’s located in the Century building;at the corner of Penn and Maryland St.This whole area is becoming quite the destination for food and drink.Tin Roof anchoring the south corner;Coaches at the north corner and O’Reilly’s in the middle.Around the corner on Pearl in the same building is Pearl Street Pizza.Factor in Scotty’s Brewery and Mo’s across the street and Morton’s one block north;so if you come to this part of town and you go home hungry or thirsty it’s your own damn fault.Well enough of the tourism talk let’s get back to the subject at hand, The Tin Roof.
The joint is deceptively airy,since they tore out part of two walls facing Penn and Maryland and added huge glass sliding doors;similar to Brother’s in Broad Ripple.Also since they can access 2 side walks they can have two patio seating areas. The walls are covered with old signs ,which is pretty cool;but the cool factor faded when I ordered a Flat 12 draft and it came in a plastic cup.I thought I was at a college kegger.I figured when Pat came he would have a beer and we would leave;go someplace more “civilized”.However the more I watched Amanda;our bartender/server work the more impressed I became.She was the perfect adherent to the old restaurant adage:”You have time to lean,you have .time to clean”.She was energetic and efficient;I figured any joint that has the good sense to hire some one like her;can’t be all bad;regardless of what they serve their beer in.
As for the menu I found it odd they didn’t offer a hamburger of any kind.They had the typical apps,wings etc.,the obligatory entrée salads and a rather large array of quesadillas,Panini style sandwiches and something they call pizzadillas;built like a quesadilla but stuffed with pizza ingredients.The various combinations offered for the ‘dillas and the sandwiches was varied and all sounded really good.Pat got a Shroom quesadill .A plain 12 inch tortilla with jack cheese mushrooms,chicken and avocado;served with rather run of the mill tortilla chips and a side of home-made salsa that was more sweet than spicy.His over all opinion was that it was tasty just not spectacular.He thought it could use more stuff inside.The same could be said for my sandwich.It consisted of turkey,bacon, avocado and provolone cheese.It was well crafted and the bread was excellent;it just seem to lack pizzazz.The side of Basalmic vinaigrette helped some what, but it still needed something.It did come with a side of crinkle cut fries,and both meals only cost $8 each.As for malt beverages they sell a flat 12 draft for $5;but the special that day was Pabst Blue Ribbon tall boys for 2 bucks.So all in all I think this may be a joint to check out;even though it is a chain all the people who work there are really special.
OK-it’s a chain not a mom and pop joint.We did not know that until we had already started eating;mea culpa.What intriqued us about this place was the combination of beef used in their patties;sirloin,chuck and brisket.All the meat comes from a local farm,and ground and packaged locally;which is pretty cool.In either event it makes for one delicious burger.They have all the usual combos;mushroom,swiss;bbq,bacon etc.They also have a Pacific Rim;a burger topped with shrimp,pineapple,guacamole and some sort of cheese. Since we wanted to taste the burger Pat and I picked the Classic,a plain old cheeseburger;with a cold set and condiments.Among their cheese offerings they have white cheddar;rare for most burger joints but great for a mid-rare burger.Which brings me to my only “complaint”.My medium rare was more medium than rare,a very minor problem,as the hunk o meat was still delicious.They make their own ketchup as well,thinner than most and sweeter as well.It’s definitely more a dipper than a pourer.
I did discover a great new beer,a Pilsner from Fountain Square Brewery.A slight citrus start and a nice hoppy finish;great with a burger.After wards we went to Berringers;a little tavern on South Meridian.I reviewed it real early in the blog.It’s just a little bar that’s been around forever.And the beer is cheap;$2 for domestic bottles,and $1.75 for Old Style pints.All that was missing was a Cubs game on TV.
So in summation chain or not Bru Burger gives you a great hamburger.And the prices are reasonable;for downtown.I think the burgers range from $8 to $10;depending on the stuff you add to it.They also have other sandwiches on the menu;but if the joint has burger in its name why would you eat chicken?
Since yesterday was such a beautiful day. We decided it was time for an excursion into Irvington.That little part of Indy certainly has grown up. In the olden days; all that was there was a Dunkin’ Donuts and the Butler inn.Now it has some legit eateries and their own Brew Pub.Of course the pub doesn’t open until 4 pm during the week;I guess they don’t feel that there is a market for the old fart afternoon beer drinking crowd.But I digress.
The legends Café is a quaint and cozy little place. I can’t believe we haven’t been there before. We met up with a friend , Jim, who lives in the area. As a matter of fact he is the one that suggested legends. Their menu has a nice assortment of deli meats, cheeses, toppings and breads. You can order one of their preselected combos, or build your own. Any selection can be Panini grilled and is available as a half (4 $) or whole (7-9$).They also offer”hot entrées”. These are in the $7-$8 range and come with one or two sides. All of their ground beef comes from a farm in Greenfield, Indiana. And I assume that means it’s probably grass-fed. Their portions are quite rational. A quarter pound burger, 5 ounce chicken breast and meatloaf in the 5 to 6 ounce range.Their sides are as unique as they are extensive;and not one fried item among them.
Pat had a whole turkey and cheddar;grilled.I opted for the “special”;a half of a brisket san on dark pumpernickel with a side of baked mac and cheese.Jim ordered what I should have gotten,chicken breast with a side of pepperjack mac and snap peas.The chicken was lightly dusted in seasoned flour;crisped in the fry pan and finished in the oven.Crispy exterior,moist and tender interior.The pepperjack mac and cheese was “da bomb” and I haven’t seen steamed snap peas on a menu since Shaffer’s in Glendale.My regular mac and cheese was good as well it just wasn’t pepper Jacky. I’m not going to say Legends deli meats were the best I’ve ever had but I am going to say that they are first-rate and with their prideful attention to detail I don’t think you will be disappointed.I am going to say that their sides are better than good so that should show you that these folks can cook.I also think the pumpernickel they use is the best I’ve had in some time.I meant to ask Stephanie(our server) where they got it,but I forgot. Speaking of servers when I asked Stephanie if I could take her picture for this blog,she hesitated.She did acquiesce if I took it with her and Jim. I still don’t know what to think of that.One last thing on servers.The servers at Legend all wear black;a uniform if you will.I know that flies against the current trend for independents to view employee dress codes with disdain;but sometimes it’s nice to be able to tell a server from a stranger that just wandered in.
Our usual lunch on Thursday didn’t happen this week. I was fighting a cold and thought it best not to go out. However the prior Monday I had errands to run and ended up at Coal Pizza for lunch. I wanted to try the sandwich the previous bartender had recommended. They call it a grinder, and it sounded similar to the sandwich I had at Taste; at 52nd and College.It was an assortment of imported Italian meats with provolone cheese and olive salad; all on a square of focaccia. The presentation was “interesting” to say the least. All the meats were finger rolled, placed on the focaccia topped with cheese and olive salad then cut on the bias.I thought the finger rolling was totally unnecessary; unless you work for Kroger assembling holiday platters. The flavor was spot on. The combination of meats with the provolone cheese and the slightly spicy olive mixture was first-rate. The weak link was the focaccia.All the focaccia I’ve had before had the texture and density of bread, not day-old cornbread. The appetizer we had the previous week had the density and texture more shortbread than anything else. Frankly I didn’t pay too much attention to it, I just took it to be an anomaly; a little goof in a newly opened joint. However one week later, one week older the bread was way too crumbly for a sandwich,regardless of how tasty the fillings were. I haven’t given up on the place; I’m just a sucker for a pizza place. Especially one with the coal-burning oven.
Who said SoBro had to be expensive? On 54th street ( a street I shall hence forth refer to as SoBro restaurant row ) sits Just Judy’s.And like Alice’s you can get anything you want there.Pizza,burgers,burritos and breakfast any time.And the prices are more than reasonable.For 4 bucks you can get a grilled cheese and all you care to eat house made soup.I opted for their $4.75 sloppy joe and fries special.I may have had better but never one so reasonably priced.Pat tried the breaded tenderloin and ate the whole thing;I think we’re in a race to become the largest ambulatory resident of Indy.You know the biggest gainer.I didn’t try any of it but I must say that was one of the best looking BTs I’ve seen in a while.These folks even make their own chips and cobblers.I went into lunch without my usual hearty appetite.I would have liked to try some cobbler;you don’t find that too often.But as they say tomorrow’s another day.All and all ( what’s that supposed to mean anyway? )We strongly recommend this place.For variety,freshness, taste and price you can’t go wrong.
