I think without realizing it Pat and I have been pursuing long operating establishments. A couple of weeks ago the Kitley Inn,established in 1946 and now Edwards an original Dog and Suds from 1957. Whereas Kitley looks as though it hasn’t changed much since ’46 Edwards definitely has had a face lift or two.
These replicas are on the side of the building and probably 3/4 size of the original rides. On the inside you will find a very swank and refined space with no vibe you may expect from an old-time diner.
The interior may be too refined and contemporary for that 50’s look but they offer non stop music from that era. If you are an old guy it will make you smile. They still offer curb service too. You order at the front counter,given a ticket and they call your number when ready. Everyone was very friendly and most helpful with my too many questions. The biggest reason I wanted to come here is I was certain that,with the exception of the root beer little of the food was done from scratch. I have no idea where or how I got that impression I just did. Well I was wrong. This place actually has cooks. My apologies to Edwards Drive In.
Wednesday they offer a $1.99 BBQ slider. For a 3 buck and change up charge you can add onion rings and a medium drink. In my case that would be a Root Beer.
Well the sandwich was so-so. Not a bad bite for 2 bucks but nothing to really make you shake,rattle or roll. Now the rings were a different story. They were crisp and flavorful and abundant. Often onion rings are a touch soggy from excessive batter. Not these. Sometimes they are just too greasy. Not these. I hesitate to call them the best I have had because I am sure I used that line before. I just have to say that these are an excellent product and they were masterfully prepared. As for the Root Beer it was as delicious as you would expect or if you are old enough as you remember from years ago.
Pat told me that we had been here before. I couldn’t remember. He also said that his breaded tenderloin last time was very greasy. This time his food was on point. I still say I have not been here with him.
I think this could be a very nice joint to visit when it is warm. Onion rings and a Root Beer. If they use the same ring batter for the mushrooms then marry that with a coney dog and Root Beer and call me satisfied.
Pat and I had lunch here a few years back but it was never properly reviewed. I did mention it in a post with some other places but nothing specific to the Tie Dye. I remember that I ate a Reuben sandwich and was not overwhelmed. That isn’t all that unusual for a joint that only sells Corned Beef as an option. This place has a very faithful following, and that prompted us to go back.
They offer a large menu with lots of cute counter-culture names for the food items that mimic the “psychedelic 60’s”.
According to the reviews the burgers are the “bomb”. Pardon the current vernacular but I haven’t used “outta’ sight” in more than 40 years. They use a 10 ounce burger and grill it to order,so if you order it medium rare that is what you get. I ordered a Chong’s chilli cheese burger for $8.95.
The burger is huge as is the bun. I ordered it medium rare and that is what I got. This sucker is definitely a knife and fork sandwich. The burger itself was excellent and coupled with a nicely toasted bun made for a wonderful sandwich. The chili covering it was a bit average;too much cumin for my liking. I would order a burger again but it would be the “Keep on Truckin” burger. Just a burger with a bun and garden for $7.95
This is a really squared away place,clean,organized and the service is great. I think it would be a good choice for lunch or dinner. They also have some very good music in the background;a nice selection of 60’s and 70’s music, not too loud either. So if you are an old hippie or a young hippie wanna be you have your old little “Woodstock” to visit for a bite.
People that go to bars realize they can be placed into 2 basic categories. Bars that make you nervous. Those bars you never even think of eating at. So you finish your drink. leave and probably never return. The second category is bars that make you feel more relaxed. Places you wouldn’t mind having a second beverage or even order a nosh.
Well I think G.G’s falls into the second category. We stopped there for a couple of beers last week and liked the whole scene. The menu has your basic bar fry food and it also has a good selection of not so basic pub grub.
I really had my eye set on the Ribeye steak. But at the last-minute I thought it might be too much food for lunch. As it turned out what I did eat was just as much.
One of the specials was a slice of New York pizza for $1.99. We decided to have that as an appetizer. They make their own crust and sauce so I wanted to try it anyway.
This is one half of the slice. My guess is it was 1/4 of a 14 inch pie. I think they only offer thin crust. The crust was pretty good, it had a nice flavor and decent mouth feel. I would have liked it a bit crisper though. As for the sauce it too had a pretty good flavor it just needed a little more pizzazz. The addition of salt would be a good start,in my opinion.
As for Pat he had planned on ordering the filet. But the allure of the big pig was too much for him.
They offered 3 lunch specials one of which was chili with grilled cheese sandwich for $ 5.95. Now that is as Hoosier as you can get.
The sandwich was what you would imagine. Buttered Texas toast and American cheese. Something I would hardly ever order out but it was a cold day and I wanted chili. What is it about grilled cheese sandwiches and soup that sound so compelling?
As for the chili it was a very good example of Indiana style chili, nothing fancy just tasty and filling. Chili is one of the many cooking things that intrigue me. All the different ways people prepare it fascinates me.
This chili was mostly ground beef with the main seasoning being chile powder. A mix of chile peppers and cumin. It had kidney beans and diced green pepper, definitely a Hoosier and “near South” thing. But the one thing that brought back the memories was the sweetness and spiciness of the soup. A job well done.
So once again we introduce to you a bar. A bar that has some very good food, very good prices and a very good bar tender/server. I believe her name is Nicole. Remember its name. G.G’s Bar & Grill.
Winter decided to ease up on us a bit and let the temperature soar to 40 degrees. So in celebration we decided to head north to Boone County , specifically Zionsville. A small town known for high property values, smart little shops and The Friendly Tavern. Now who can resist a joint with Friendly in its name?
This place has been around for more than 35 years. We know this because our bartender has worked there for 35 years. Now that is staying power for both the place and the person. She has gone through 4 owners during that time. I dare say people would think they came into the wrong place were she not there.
The menu features typical tavern fare, is reasonably priced and Pat approved.
I noticed that their chili had won an award in the past. So, since the past is where most old dudes are comfortable, it seemed as though I should give it a try.
I am glad I did. It was one of the best mid west style cups of chili I have eaten. It had a respectable amount of spice and a touch of sweet, typical of Hoosier chili. And no pasta.
I decided on a turkey reuben. Not sure why. It just sounded like something I should try. It was pretty good, but not rock your world good. The swirled rye bread was great. The turkey was common deli sliced, and the kraut was typical. And it had no cheese. They tried to “kick it up” with a horseradish mayo on the side; but it could have used a bigger kick of horseradish. I ate it all. It was good, just not great. But I am not sure what I was expecting. I think I was sidetracked by the rib eye steak calling my name. It tempted me. But I resisted. That was too much food for lunch. If I manage to get back, the steak is mine.
The joint is not that big so go early. They open at 11:00, we got there at 11:20 and the place was starting to fill. We left at noon and there was a line at the door. It’s no wonder the place is popular. They have good food, more than reasonable prices and the staff is super nice and friendly. I mean how can they not be when Friendly is your name o.
Well guys there’s a new joint on Virginia Ave. It’s similar to a lot of new joints, in that it sports a lot of wood, granite and shiny new equipment. I think the Ember , with its use of warm colors, projects a more cozy atmosphere than most.
Their menu is a single sheet of paper which keeps it simple to start and allows them to change it without a huge cost. It also is one heck of a lot easier to peruse than the encyclopedia some joints offer. They have a smoker which they use for wings and brisket. So that separates them from a lot of places around.
Since Thursday was such a miserable, cold and snowy day I decided I needed a cup of hot soup to start. Their SOD didn’t trip my trigger but they did offer chili. Or in this case Wandering Chili. Now that means they change it on whim. One day “traditional” with ground beef, another day chopped brisket or maybe chicken chili. That day it featured ground beef and beans. Maybe more traditional but not quite typical. It was a tasty mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and chile powder. Very good and definitely on point for the weather.
Their burgers are 1/2 pound, hand formed patties of a mixture of brisket, round steak and short rib. They cook them to order and serve them on a toasted brioche bun with choice of side for $8.50. I ordered mine medium rare. Well the kitchen guy goofed and it came out well done. One of the owners, who was also our bartender , was very apologetic and adamant about giving me a recook. Well hard-headed me was just as adamant to keep it. I kept it and the funny thing, as it grew cooler more of the flavor of the beef came out and as the Swiss cheese warmed the tastier it became. Now I am determined to go back and try the burger at a more civilized temperature. Besides, their draft beer system wasn’t up and the owner graciously took the burger off the bill.
So it appears the New Year is off to a good start. A new joint is up and running and appears to definitely be a keeper. And more are on the way. Eating places, breweries and even a distillery. And you can expect Pat and I to keep you all informed. Happy New Year.http://www.emberurbaneatery.com/
What a big name for a rather small place. Pat and I have been meaning to try this place for a while, don’t know why we haven’t until now. They have a pretty good format. They offer a wide variety of deli and sub sandwiches; grilled or cold. Pair that up with house made soups and chili and a plethora of different salads you have a joint with lunch written all over it. If you take that marriage and add a case displaying the most decadent looking cakes and pastries this side of Bavaria you have a brand. They even have a merchandise freezer offering a selection of their products you can take home. Well now that my cheer leader routine is over let’s talk about their food.
They have a category called grilled sandwiches that are all $9.40 and come with choice of soup,salad,chili or mac & cheese. I got a Havarti Delight. Havarti cheese,avocado,sprouts and tomato on wheat bread. It was a nicely prepared and tasty sandwich. Creamy cheese, double buttery from the avocado and the buttered toast with just the right touch of acidity from the ‘mater. Had I to do it over again I would have added bacon. Bacon is always a nice addition. I did have a bowl of chili. I had to have some meat or else my stomach would have thought I was angry with it. The chili was pretty good better than most; not as good as some. Pat had his usual default lunch; grilled cheese. It had an interesting choice of cheeses. Provolone,jack and Colby on what appeared to be sourdough bread. It was satisfactory. However Pat got a little miffed when he learned ,after the fact, he should have been offered bread choice and an option to add 2 veggies from a list of 4 . I guess he should have read the menu board. He opted for salad with oil and vinegar. Has the manufacture of oil and vinegar cruets been suspended? Once again the oil and vinegar was served in portion cups. OK end of rant. After lunch Pat had a chocolate glazed donut. I had a bite and it was really good. Trouble is it cost $1.67. As Patrick so sagely pointed out it was no better than Longs and for that price he could have gotten 3 donuts. I think you better leave your sweet tooth at home when you stop here for lunch.
