Barringer’s Tavern opened in 1879 and I believe it has been some sort of business continuously. During Prohibition it sold ice cream, candy, lunch and dinner. Legend has it they sold more than food from a window in back. Their signature foods were turtle soup, with the turtles being raised in a pond out back. Also pig’s feet; in 1947 they sold over 97000 feet. I am not sure why they say they were re-established in 2019 because I think Pat and I ate here before we started writting about it. It isn’t a fancy place but it is airy and comfortable. They are hardly a Gastropub but the food they serve is good, and the prices are resaonable.
They had a meatloaf special that came with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. That was too much starch for me, but what I did order was even more heart unhealthy. A Last Chance hot dog. That was a 1/4 pound beef hot dog wrapped in bacon and fried. It came with sweet relish and Sirachi sour cream. I should have stood pat with that just 86 the crema and sub mustard. However for an extra buck I could get it covered with chili. Why not.
It wasn’t the most photogenic lunch but the dog was really good. The chili was so so and looked as if it had been hanging out on a steam table too long. I would do it again with relish and mustard. It was only $5.69 plus a buck. Pat’s fish was $8.29 so eating here won’t hurt your pocket book. I drove yesterday so I know the short cuts that only a local can provide so I will be back. I want to try the fish and chips and add some coleslaw.
This place is like several around town. Family owned and operated with huge menus offering large portions and breakfast served all day. It may be tempting to slip in a phrase like “cookie cutter” but that would hardly be accurate. You may find an identical menu at some other joint but the preparation is far from identical. That is probably why I order liver and onions so often. I always expect that I will be pleasantly surprised.
Yep I did it again. Liver and onions with potato choice and one other side for $9.99. I like my onions well carmelized and the meat medium rare. I understand that a thin slice of liver is hard to get medium rare but it can be cooked to medium rather easily. Well obviously the onions missed the mark and the liver was over cooked. It was also over breaded. I contend a light coating of flour is sufficient but here they seem to have used an actual breading. So the result was that you mainly tasted the coating, with a slight flavor of liver. I would make it at home but the store where I used to buy my liver does not handle it anymore. They used to sell fresh slices that were one half inch thick and cooked up a delightful mid-rare.
For my second side I opted for green beans. They were really pretty good. They were canned but had bits of onion and tomato in them. Pretty tasty.
Pat’s diet plate was $10.99, so we actually got quite a bit of food for our money. Don’t let my liver experience dissuade you from trying this place out. I am reasonably certain you will find something you will enjoy. I just don’t recommend the liver and onions.
Our lunch schedule has been erratic because I have been under going some extensive dental work (dentures).This trip to Four Seasons actually happened approximately 4 weeks ago when I still had my front teeth;only my front teeth.I guess I have just been lazy in not writing it up until now.Four Seasons is on South Meridian,real close to Greenwood.We’ve been there before,pre Blog days;so it’s not a ground breaking trip.It’s a nice little joint;along the lines of Flap Jacks.It offers pretty good food at a decent price.Pat ordered a French Dip ($6.95);with a side of apple sauce.The beef,I can see;the apple sauce?Go figure.It was your basic Kroger deli roast beef on a decent roll.Tasty but a small portion;and the au-jus was more au than jus.Overall,nothing to get worked up over.I,on the other hand,opted for a “diet plate” ($7.25).On that you got a tomato stuffed with your choice of tuna salad or turkey salad;along with cottage cheese,fresh veggie garnish and the ubiquitous diet plate inhabitant.The canned peach half.What I got was a nice 5×6 tomato stuffed with a very tasty home-made turkey salad,a full fat cottage cheese and of course the aforementioned peach.The only reason I mentioned the fat content of the cheese is that,at home,I eat 1% or 2% fat cottage cheese.And the real deal is SO much creamier and tasty.But the nicest thing about this joint was the staff.They all were friendly, and acted as if they really wanted to help us.Something you don’t always see.
Afterwards;for the refreshment part of our trip we decided to stop at the Longacre Tavern.It too is on the south side,Madison Avenue north of Southport.It has been around for quite a while;and it looks it.I don’t think I’ve in there for 30 years.They offer New Castle or Blue Moon draft for $5.50 and domestic draft for $3.Downtown prices for a joint that ain’t downtown.’Nuff said.
