I found this place by accident a few weeks ago on my way to my son’s new house. They are an Italian food restaurant which offers the trio of Italian fare. Pasta, Pizza and subs.
However their main bag is the buffet; $5.99 for lunch. Honestly Pat and I were dubious about this joint because we really didn’t expect much for 6 bucks. Boy were we ever wrong.
It isn’t a large buffet but the quality of the pies is excellent. Both the sauce and crust were top-notch. They offer a basic salad service and they are constantly replenishing the pizza, keeping about 8 of them on deck at all times. The man even takes requests. He made Pat a mushroom no onion and a cheese burger pie; with dill pickle; for a couple of other guys. I think that is what I liked best about Mama Nita’s the guy put out pies with different toppings; not just the traditional. Buffalo and BBQ chicken and bacon plus he wasn’t afraid to load up different veggies.
They even have bread sticks and some are stuffed with pepperoni.
I know the pictures aren’t much but you know I have issues with taking pictures of buffets. For your sweet tooth there is a small freezer at the end which holds ice cream sandwiches. Only one per customer regardless how cute you are. He also has a cinnamon pie. It is simply a pizza loaded with cinnamon sugar and topped with a white icing. Like a breakfast bun.
I thought that was great, especially hot out of the oven. Try a slice with an ice ream sandwich.
So like that adage about books and covers you should never judge a pizza joint by its pricing. Here you will get an exceptional meal as well as an exceptional value. With the senior discount lunch for 2 was $11.17 with tax. Worth the trip.
One more bit of trivia about the Long Acre. Back in the day it was owned by a local celebrity D.J. Jimmy Mattis, AKA The Dog. While he was the proprietor he worked on a beef stew recipe in trying to replicate John’s Famous Stew. The Dog gave the recipe to the new owner; Sonley and a young lady named Shannon made a batch. Pat learned this on Monday when he did a bit of recon on the joint. He was also told that it had too many chiles in it. So we had to try some just to see for ourselves.
It was a pretty good bowl of stew and a close match to John’s. However John’s was a tomato base and this wasn’t. In either event it was a good stew and it wasn’t too hot.
Their menu is standard bar fare, and they offer daily specials. The special today was salmon patties with a choice of fries or onion rings for $7.95. It also came with coleslaw.
As you can see I opted for the rings. They were your pretty standard IQF ring but they were pretty tasty and actually were solid onion rings. The salmon patties were pretty tasty as well just a bit flatter than what I am accustom to.
So the Long Acre is back in business. Service is great. Shannon waited on us. The same Shannon that made the stew. She also made the salmon patties. The domestic drafts are only $2.25 and are super cold. Pat’s sandwich was $7.95 and our “cup” of soup was $3.95. So you can’t complain about the prices. They even have a working fireplace in the dining room. I would be back on a regular basis but it is too far for me to drive. But I will be back.
We had planned on having lunch at the only Russian restaurant in Indianapolis. It has been around for a while but only open for dinner service. I discovered this week that they had started serving lunch . I was really excited but I have been disappointed before. I looked up back up joints in the area just in case. Well, they changed their hours and reverted back to dinner only. So I told Pat that he had a choice of Indian or American pub. He decided on American Pub.
The cheese curds were very good. They weren’t built-in house but they were tasty. I don’t think much on the menu is house made. Surprisingly enough it is a one person kitchen. Our bartender/cook was the manager ,who was left by herself because the bartender called in sick. That young lady rocked it.
I had wanted to order the Stromboli but since Pat beat me to it I ordered the Roast Beef Panini.

It was an interesting sandwich. The meat was deli roast beef, which is a bit dry by itself. The cream cheese and sauce brought a much-needed moistness and the peppers gave the sandwich a nice little hint of spice and acid. Our cook asked how I wanted it toasted; which was a nice touch. Like Pat’s sammie I got a heaping helping of Tater Tots. I took half the tots and half the sandwich home. Both were bargains at $9.
I am with Pat about the joint. Were it closer I would be a regular. For me it wasn’t .the food menu or the expansive draft heads it would be the bartender/server/cook. She was a very capable and charming young lady. As a retired member of the restaurant biz I am glad to see someone young wanting to take up this industry as a profession. She even expressed an interest in going to Culinary School. I thought her excitement for food was great. If you are in the area you really should stop in for a bite and a beverage. I am sorry I didn’t do a proper introduction; so I do not know her name. But drop in and introduce your self.
I am sure the name is familiar to several people. However if you can’t quite place it how about if you put the name on a truck.
Now it probably comes together. The popular food truck is now a brick and mortar on the South side. Folks that follow the food trucks know about the pizza but for the ones who don’t rest assure that this is the “real deal”. Also they have more than just pie at the shop.
Since it is so close to Pat’s house he brought the joint to my attention. Pat likes their product for the same reason most folks like it. It is good pizza and you can buy just a slice. If you want just a taste you can get a big slice for about 4 bucks. If you want more you can go the whole pie route in the form of a 16 or 20 incher. If pie doesn’t suit you try a Stromboli for $5.99. Now to me a Stromboli is a sandwich but here it is like a Calzone filled with sausage, pepperoni and cheese.
And it is huge and delicious
At first sight you might think that, as big as it is, it can’t have much filling in it. However you would be wrong. It had “stuff” in every bite. So it was big, full of cheese sausage and pepperoni and it was tasty as well. I could go on about the crust being an excellent partner to the creamy cheese and slightly unctuous pepperoni and sausage. Or the red “gravy” on the side added a wonderfully acidic note to the creation. But I will merely say it was good and oh so economical and you should try one.
So there you have it. The New York Slice. For when you are in a New York “frame of mind” and are hungry.
This joint is a first for us. The food is cooked to order, but with pre- made product. They use a frozen crust and a ready-made sauce for the pizza. The pizza product comes from a well know purveyor that sells a good product. They also use an independent restaurant supply for the rest of their inventory.
We learned of this joint recently after visiting Jimbo’s BBQ. Actually this was where we heard of Soul Bear’s. The hook to us was the fact they were just blocks from the BBQ and they offered $1 domestic bottles on Wednesday. As for the reason we decided to eat here was solely because of Danielle. She waits tables, tends bar and cooks the food all with an amazing amount of energy and humor. She told us she wanted to go to a Culinary School but was having second thoughts. Her attitude about cooking and tending to the customers is very refreshing. She does everything to the best of her ability which is very exciting to see. That is why we opted to have lunch here. There are several joints that have one person doing it all. Serving drinks and cooking food and they are all independently owned and they deserve some attention as well as a Gastropub.
Staying with the “sausage” motif I opted for a corn dog as my app.
It was pretty dark in the bar so my pictures are less that stellar. For my “main dish” I chose a Stromboli. As Danielle explained it to me she prepares the sandwich the same as a deluxe pizza. Ground meat, sauce, peppers,onions, mushrooms, pepperoni and cheese all on a toasted Hoagie bun. All of the pizza product comes from Delco Foods, a well know supplier of Italian food products. This sandwich was a big hit. The bun was exceptional and the toast was just right. It hit all the right notes and went down quickly. For $6 it was a bargain.
This is what you see when you first walk in. The joint has been around for about 12 years. Unfortunately I have never heard of it until about 1 year ago. There is not a whole lot of reviews for the place. I am not sure why. It might be because it is a 24 / 7 joint. It is open for business 24 hours per day. They don’t sell liquor from 3 AM to 7 AM. Like the French Quarter in New Orleans.
On the day I went to Soupremacy I thought I would check out Olly’s. Before Pat and I visit a place I like to know what they offer. So… I stopped by on the way home. The joint has some great specials and some pretty good food.
That day I had their sloppy Joe sandwich, with tater tots. I know… sloppy Joe is pretty much country, and pretty much “what ever”. But…good food is eternal and their version is really quite tasty. The tots weren’t as tasty as Slippery Noodle,not as spicy, but still good. The bartender, Alex told me he was from the South and back home the dish is called Spanish burger. I thought that was interesting. I took quite a few pictures of the place because I thought it was rather eclectic. If you had to define the style I think it would be referred to as “Urban Informal”, or maybe “Urbane Tacky”. In either event I found it to be comfortable.
I know glass blocks are to decor as white bucks are to men’s shoes, but here they work.
Their menu is huge. I scanned it and I intend to add it to this post; it is entertaining just to peruse the menu. Since it never closes it has a separate breakfast menu as well. For a 4 hour period in the AM they offer 2 eggs, potatoes, sausage or bacon choice and toast for $1.99. Now that is worth getting up early for.
Patrick is leaving out the best part. In addition to the peanut butter the burger had jalapeno, pepper jack cheese and bacon. But I guess you can see that in the picture.
I ordered one of the lunch specials, for $7.99. Stromboli Pasta. That would be – sausage, pepperoni, peppers and onions in a red sauce over linguine.
The result was a very tasty dish. It tasted like a pepperoni and sausage pizza with noodles. I wouldn’t hesitate ordering it again. I also think it was a clever way of cross utilization of product. Every food item on a menu should be used in at least 2 different applications. In my opinion.
So for a good lunch or dinner Olly’s should be on your short list. Good food, good prices and good specials. Thursday’s drink specials were $2 domestic bottles and $2 well drinks. And since this is Indiana the drink specials are good for the whole day. And lastly but not leastly the service is stellar. Thanks again Alex.
Well South of Chicago, take notice there is a Hoosier right here in Naptown that cooks a pretty mean hunk of beef. The Fresco Italian Sandwich Shoppe actually has 2 locations. One in the Marsh Grocery at 320 N. New Jersey and the other at 310 W. Michigan. On the canal. Since it was raining we opted for the New Jersey location. The joint has only been opened about three years. It is run by 2 brothers using their Dad’s recipes. And these recipes are golden. Their signature Italian beef is easily as tasty as South of Chicago’s. Fresco might have a slight edge in that they offer their sandwiches as a 4 inch half or an 8 inch whole.
We started off splitting a small Caprese Salad. He uses Roma tomatoes from a local Farmers Market, uses a local Mozzarella cheese and grows his own Basil. So needless to say the salad was fresh and delicious.
I was torn between the beef and the meatball. The owner suggested I get the beef and he would give us a sample of meatball to try. So how could I not accept such a generous offer. Again all I can say is the beef is easily as tasty as South of Chicago. On that Pat and I were in agreement. He “discovered” this place when he was shopping and had already tried a half of a beef sandwich. I might suggest you get yours dipped. The Gonnella bun soaks up all the tasty jus and still keeps its shape. A lesser roll would dissolve. As for the meat ball and accompanying red sauce it too was excellent, and on the same level as the beef.
So I can’t think of anymore to add. Except this. If you like Good Italian Beef now you have a second place to score. In addition if Caprese or meatballs are your thing then this has to be at the top of your list.
